Safe Exchange Tips
Finding a match for your lost item is a great feeling! However, the final step — the physical handover — requires caution. Whether you are returning an item or claiming one, please follow these Safety First guidelines.
Meet in Public Places
Never agree to meet in a secluded area, a private residence, or late at night. The safest places for a handover include:
- Local Police Stations
- Busy Metro Stations or Bus Stops
- Shopping Malls or Cafés with CCTV cameras
Inspect Before You Leave
For Owners:
Check the item carefully to ensure it is truly yours and that it is in the condition you expect before leaving the meeting location.
For Finders:
Ask the claimant to provide proof of ownership before handing over the item. This could include an old photo of the item, a purchase receipt, or unlocking a mobile phone using the correct password.
Bring a Buddy
Whenever possible, take a friend or family member with you when meeting someone for an item handover. There is safety in numbers.
